Gothenburg Central Station: The Oldest Railway Station in Sweden

Visit the oldest station in Sweden — Gothenburg Central Station (Göteborg C) — and begin your incredible journey by train. The station officially opened on October 4, 1858, built on the site of a former prison. Almost a hundred years after opening, Gothenburg Main Station was rebuilt and enlarged in 1923, but unfortunately caught a fire the same year which destroyed a large part of the building. In March 1923, the fire extensively damaged the station, but it was reconstructed preserving its 1923 design vision. Nowadays the station still reflects that 1923 vision with its wood pillars, limestone floor and glass ceiling.
Gothenburg Central Station serves as the primary transport hub for Gothenburg and handles roughly 27 million passengers annually, making it the second busiest station in Sweden after Stockholm.

History of Gothenburg Central Station

The station officially opened on October 4, 1858, on the site of a former prison in central Gothenburg. In March 1923, a fire extensively damaged the station, but it was reconstructed preserving its 1923 design vision — the wood pillars, limestone floor, and glass ceiling you see today date from that reconstruction. The station has been expanded and modernised several times since, but its distinctive historic character remains intact. Gothenburg Central is the oldest station in Sweden and one of the largest railway stations in the country, serving as the main railway station for the entire west coast region. The station's waiting hall remains one of the most impressive spaces in any Swedish train station, with waiting areas designed to accommodate the millions of station guests who pass through each year.
